#1 New York Times Bestseller
A 2025 best book of the year so far by The New York Times, The Economist, NPR, and more
"Careless People is darkly funny and genuinely shocking...Not only does [Sarah Wynn-Williams] have the storytelling chops to unspool a gripping narrative; she also delivers the goods." -Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times

"When one of the world's most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book — amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this — it's time to pull out all the stops." –Ron Charles, The Washington Post
An explosive memoir charting one woman's career at the heart of one of the most influential companies on the planet, Careless People gives you a front-row seat to Facebook, the decisions that have shaped world events in recent decades, and the people who made them.
From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.
Sarah Wynn-Williams tells the wrenching but fun story of Facebook, mapping its rise from stumbling encounters with juntas to Mark Zuckerberg's reaction when he learned of Facebook's role in Trump's election. She experiences the challenges and humiliations of working motherhood within a pressure cooker of a workplace, all while Sheryl Sandberg urges her and others to "lean in."
Careless People is a deeply personal account of why and how things have gone so horribly wrong in the past decade—told in a sharp, candid, and utterly disarming voice. A deep, unflinching look at the role that social media has assumed in our lives, Careless People reveals the truth about the leaders of Facebook: how the more power they grasp, the less responsible they become and the consequences this has for all of us.

Yikes! This tell-all expos written and performed by a former insider at Facebook confirms concerns about the inner workings of one of the most influential organizations on the planet. Author Sarah Wynn-Williams tells her personal story of her climb to the upper branches of management at Facebook and the disappointment shel felt at every move. While acknowledging that most users consider Facebook a friendly, useful tool, Wynn-Williams perfectly articulates her concerns about what goes on behind the curtain. In her opinion, Facebook is run by people who are more concerned with profits and power than ethics and responsibility. In fact, the upper echelon of the company goes out of its way to avoid such consideration, using expediency and opportunity as guidelines. M.S. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

New Zealand-born former diplomat Wynn-Williams knew she wanted to make a difference in the world, and when she saw how much potential positive influence Facebook had in its early days, she was determined to be part of it. At first things went swimmingly, calling on old contacts to facilitate meetings with world leaders and policymakers to make sure Facebook remained a good global citizen. But Facebook started getting in trouble, not moderating, even favouring hateful content. This memoir about her time with the company tells a story about monsters. Powerful public figures playing God with the global body politic in the name of profit, fully aware of the harm. Some of the stories included are: the board games with Mark Zuckerberg on private jets to and from international political events, where he accuses her of cheating because she wins; Facebook 2IC Sheryl Sandberg virtually ordering Wynn-Williams to go to bed with her, turning dark, after she refuses. There’s an expectation she’s always available for work while in hospital to give birth. She becomes constantly terrified of being summarily fired and unable to support her family. There are the bro codes, the devoted, cult-like groupthink and the damage the ‘move fast and break things’ mentality can cause in society. Emergency arbitration ruling Meta (owner of Facebook) filed with the American Arbitration Association banned her or her publisher from promoting the book. Of course, there are two sides to every story. You be the judge. Reviewed by Drew Turney
